Huck O Hulyo Year 12: 8 teams competed for this year's Iloilo's Annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

Huck O Hulyo is an annual ultimate frisbee tournament happening in Iloilo every July of the year. This has been one of the long-standing sports tournaments and for consecutive years held at Savannah Football Field, Georgia by Vista Estates in Oton Iloilo, Philippines.

Ultimate, popularly known as Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with a disc flung by the hand. The mechanics of the game are somewhat similar to American Football, wherein you need to throw and pass on the disc with your teammate toward the opponent's end zone following sets of basic rules. 

This unique sport is played in two formats: the field and the beach. It can be played seven on seven (7x7) on a rectangular field roughly the same size as a football field, or five on five (5x5) on the beach.

The Ultimate Community in Iloilo is also consistent and is nicely growing. Huck O Hulyo's core organizers namely Shielamar and Neco Tupas together with the other core members, were highly dedicated to introducing the ultimate to many locals. They have been conducting Sports Clinics regularly in different municipalities of Iloilo.

The first few tournaments of Huck O Hulyo started at Central Philippines University (CPU) where most of the players are studying. Gradually, when the tournament flourished they invited various teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Community indeed continued to play until today. 

"The future of ultimate here in the Philippines is [talagang] in good hands. We were able to send the youth teams to compete and gain experience. It is really a big community, with many opportunities, not just locally, but as well as internationally. " Cess Trinidad, of JMJ Sports Training noted. 

"Ultimate shows a balance of competitiveness and what we call "Spirit of the Game". This is the only sport that has no referee. You will appreciate the honesty and integrity of each player during the game. It is self-officiated and it is first of its kind without sacrificing competitiveness.", Trinidad added. 

More and more players from different provinces in the Philippines are more willing to travel to play and compete in national sports competitions like Huck O Hulyo. 

"Why did I stay in Ultimate and not in my other sports? It's because it's fun, it's the community, the camaraderie, it's the values you get in this sport. How you played in the game is a display of who you are in real life." Shielamar Gascon-Tupas, one of the core organizers of Huck O Hulyo cited.

Some of the players of this year's Huck O Hulyo are set to compete in the upcoming international frisbee tournaments to represent the Philippines. 

The Philippines' Ultimate Frisbee Team will compete at the Asia Oceanic Ultimate Guts Championship, consisting of Asian and Oceana Countries such as Australia and New Zealand. 

Shiela Tupas and Cess Trinidad and other players are also looking forward to competing at the Beach Worlds by November 2023 to represent the Philippines in different divisions.

The Ultimate Frisbee community in Iloilo encourages everyone to join and try playing ultimate every Wednesday and Friday at West Visayas State University, Lapaz Campus between 6 pm to 8 pm.
